Introducing the Seiko 5 Sports Heritage "Kamen Rider" SRPL03 and SRPL05

Recreating one of the most iconic Seiko 5 models from the late 1960s.
When relaunched in 2019, the accessible Seiko 5 Sports collection aimed to revive the beloved SKX series with a diving-oriented look. Since then, the collection has significantly expanded, featuring field models, more compact watches, and even GMT versions. We have also seen the return of historic designs, including the very first Seiko 5 Sports from 1968 and a watch inspired by the Kamen Rider. Today, Seiko goes beyond mere inspiration by reintroducing the look of the late-1960s 5126-8090 Kamen Rider with two Heritage models: the SRPL03 and SRPL05.

While the brand has already recreated the look of the original 1968 Seiko 5 Sports with the limited edition SRPK17, it had yet to faithfully bring back one of the most iconic models in this collection. We've seen the "Kamen Rider" used as inspiration for a limited edition model—the SRPJ91—but it was mostly a classic SKX series with a different dial and bezel insert. Today, Seiko goes the extra mile by introducing a duo of models with identical cases, dials, and bracelets.

Seiko's SRPL03 and SRPL05 watches introduce a new design that pays homage to the original Seiko 5 Sports 5126-8090 Kamen Rider, combining a retro-inspired shape with modern proportions and materials. These new models feature a compact case with a diameter of 38.5mm and a short lug-to-lug measurement of 44.8mm. The rest of the design stays true to the classic 5 Sports series, including a barely visible crown at 4 o'clock, Hardlex mineral glass on top, a rotating bezel with a silver-toned metallic insert reminiscent of the original, and a screw-down case back. The water resistance has been improved to 100m, compared to the 70m rating of the past. The boxy shape evokes a 1960s-1970s aesthetic that will appeal to fans of the brand.

LINE-UP
The dial is, once again, heavily inspired by the original watches. The SRPL03 features a silver brushed dial, while the SRPL05 has a matte black surface. Like the original, there is a graphic minute track with blocks and baton markers with lume inserts, straight hands, and a red lollipop seconds hand. References to the past are prominent throughout, including an oddly shaped day-date window and a light blue "Sports" mention. Even the original Seiko 5 logo has been recreated for this occasion.

The heritage inspiration continues with Seiko reintroducing the single-link stainless steel bracelet for this pair of models. With a fully brushed top, this bracelet significantly enhances the overall aesthetic. It features a folding clasp with a push-button release. Additionally, the package includes a retro rally-style black leather strap.
No surprises under the dial, as the Seiko 5 Sports SRPL03 and SRPL05 are powered by the reliable Calibre 4R36. This automatic movement operates at a 3Hz frequency, offers approximately 41 hours of power reserve, and includes a hacking function. It’s concealed beneath a solid case back with dedicated engravings.

Released in a limited edition of 9,999 pieces per colorway, the Kamen Rider-inspired Seiko 5 Sports Heritage SRPL03K1 and SRPL05K1 will be available in July 2024.
